Sleeve Gastrectomy

Dr. Nguyen’s patients work with a complete medical team including a dietitian before and after undergoing a sleeve gastrectomy to ensure optimal weight loss results. Call our office for a consultation.

Most Commonly Performed Weight Loss Surgery

The gastric sleeve procedure was first performed in 2000.  To date, hundreds of thousands of patients have undergone this surgery successfully.  Of all the bariatric procedures, the sleeve gastrectomy is the most commonly performed weight loss surgery.  Its success is due to the fact that the surgery causes few complications and side effects.

Dr. Nguyen performs this procedure laparoscopically using the DaVinci robot, which results in optimal precision, minimal scarring, and less down-time than traditional surgery.  Known for being an extremely safe procedure, the gastric sleeve actually has a lower mortality rate compared to other procedures such as gallbladder removal or hip replacement.  The entire procedure takes approximately 90 minutes to complete and requires only one overnight stay in the hospital.

How Gastric Sleeve Surgery Works

During Gastric Sleeve Surgery, approximately 75-80% of the stomach is removed, leaving a small, tube-shaped stomach (or “sleeve”).  This not only limits the amount of food you can eat but also reduces the production of hunger hormone ghrelin, which helps decrease appetite.

The procedure achieves 2 outcomes:

      1. Stomach size reduction – the volume of the stomach is drastically reduced, which helps portion control.
      2. Hormonal changes – part of the stomach which is removed secretes the hormone Ghrelin ( a hormone that induces hunger). With lower levels of this hunger hormone, patients experience reduced appetite and cravings, making it easier to adhere to a reduced-calorie diet.
Benefits of Gastric Sleeve Surgery
  • Substantial Weight Loss– Gastric Sleeve Surgery can lead to significant and sustained weight loss; often resulting in a loss of 60-70% of excess body weight within the first year.  Within 12-24 months goal weight can be achieved in 80-90% of patients. It is particularly effective for individuals who have struggled with weight regain after other types of weight loss interventions.
  • Improvement in Obesity-Related Conditions – Many patients experience improvements in their conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea.  Weight loss achieved through Gastric Sleeve Surgery can reduce or even eliminate the need for medications to treat these conditions.
  • Long-Term Results – Gastric Sleeve Surgery provides a durable weight loss solution, with many patients maintaining their weight loss for years. Potential results include improved self-esteem and overall body image, increased tolerance for physical activity,  and improved sleep.
Who is a Candidate for the Gastric Sleeve Procedure?
  • Patients with a BMI of 40 or greater.
  • Patients with a BMI of 35 or greater AND suffer from at least one weight-related disease (such as diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea).
  • Patients who have failed to achieve permanent weight loss through traditional diet and exercise methods.
Procedure Process
  • Patient is placed under general anesthesia and kept asleep and comfortable for the entire operation.
  • Tiny incisions are made in the abdomen to accommodate the surgical tools.
  • The stomach is divided into 2 unequal parts.
  • A vertical calibration tube is inserted into the stomach to guide the surgeon in re-shaping the stomach. The outer 75% of the stomach is removed. The remaining portion, which is now the size of a banana, is stapled shut.  The excess stomach tissue is removed.
  • Patient is moved to the recovery room to be closely monitored and to recover from anesthesia.
  • Patient is moved to the hospital room where nursing staff monitors the patient to ensure they are comfortable and pain-free.
  • Patient is discharged from the hospital the following day with instructions on diet and pain medication (if needed).
