Sleeve Gastrectomy

Dr. Nguyen’s patients work with a complete medical team including a dietitian before and after undergoing a sleeve gastrectomy to ensure optimal weight loss results. Call our office for a consultation.

The gastric sleeve procedure was first performed in 2000. To date, hundreds of thousands of patients have undergone this surgery successfully. Of all the bariatric procedures, the sleeve gastrectomy is the most commonly performed weight loss surgery. Its success is due to the fact that the surgery causes few complications and side effects.

While the gastric bypass involves reducing the stomach size and restructuring the digestive system, the gastric sleeve procedure is a less invasive surgery that is able to achieve similar results without re-routing the digestive system.

Dr. Nguyen performs this procedure laparoscopically using the da Vinci Robot, which results in optimal precision, minimal scarring, and less downtime than traditional surgery. Known for being an extremely safe procedure, the gastric sleeve actually has a lower mortality rate compared to other procedures such as gallbladder removal or a hip replacement. The entire procedure takes approximately only 90 minutes to complete and only requires one overnight stay in the hospital.

PROCEDURE PROCESS

Tiny incisions are made in the abdomen to accommodate the surgical tools.

The stomach is divided into two unequal parts.

A vertical calibration tube is inserted into the stomach to guide the surgeon in reshaping the stomach. The outer 75% of the stomach is removed. The remaining portion, which is now the size of a banana, is stapled shut. The excess stomach tissue is removed.

The procedure achieves two outcomes. First, the volume of the stomach is drastically reduced, which helps portion control. Secondly, the part of the stomach which is removed secretes the hormone Ghrelin, which actually induces hunger. As a result, patients do not feel the constant hunger they did before the surgery.

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR THE SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY?

Patients with a BMI of 40 or greater.

Patients with a BMI of 35 or greater and also suffer from at least one weight-related disease such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea.

Patients who have failed to achieve permanent weight loss through traditional diet and exercise methods.

HOW MUCH WEIGHT CAN PATIENTS EXPECT TO LOSE AFTER THE GASTRIC SLEEVE PROCEDURE?

First 6-12 months: minimum of 50% of excess weight.

12-24 months: goal weight can be achieved. This usually happens in 80-90% of patients.
