Revision Bariatric Surgery
Revision surgery is a possibility for anyone who has not achieved their weight loss goals, has experienced unwanted side effects, or has experienced complications.
You May Be a Candidate for a Revision Surgery
Whether you have had a gastric bypass, a gastric sleeve or a Lap Band, you may be a candidate for a revision surgery. Revision surgery is a possibility for anyone who has not achieved their weight loss goals, has experienced unwanted side effects, or has experienced complications.
Dr. Nguyen performs this procedure laparoscopically using the DaVinci robot, which results in optimal precision, minimal scarring, and less down-time than traditional surgery. The entire procedure takes approximately 90 minutes to complete and requires only one overnight stay in the hospital.
Common Reasons for Revision Bariatric Surgery
- Weight gain after surgery
- Ruptured or displaced gastric bands
- Enlarged gastric pouch
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
- Problems swallowing
How Revision Bariatric Surgery Works
Regardless of your initial bariatric procedure Dr. Nguyen will perform an endoscopy to evaluate your esophagus, stomach, and the beginning of your intestines. Afterwards, he will discuss the findings and together you will discuss your revision options:
Roux‑en-Y Gastric Bypass Revision
Possible findings: the original gastric pouch created during surgery may become larger over time.
He corrects this by:
- Increasing intestinal bypass
- Decreasing the pouch and stomach size
Gastric Sleeve Revision
Possible findings: dilated stomach, narrowing of one portion of the stomach, evidence of severe reflux.
He can correct this by:
- Converting the gastric sleeve to a gastric bypass
- Recreating the gastric sleeve
Lap-Band Revision
Possible clinical indications: failed weight loss, dysphagia, GERD.
Possible EGD findings: evidence of severe reflux, dilated stomach above the placement of the band.
He can correct this by:
- Removing the Lap-Band and port.
- Converting a gastric sleeve
Benefits of Revision Bariatric Surgery
- Improve overall health and quality of life.
- Enable you to achieve your weightloss goals.
- Reduce (or eliminate) side effects that may be present from your previous bariatric procedure. This includes reflux or difficulty swallowing.
- Improve (or resolve) complications related to your original bariatric surgery such as ulcers or strictures.
Life After Revision Bariatric Surgery
In order to achieve the most impactful change from your surgery, individuals choose to embrace a lifestyle that focuses on:
- A diet high in proteins and vegetables, controlling portion size and avoiding processed foods and sugars.
- Incorporating an active lifestyle that includes aerobic exercise as well as a weight-training program
- Becoming involved in a support-group or facebook page to share ideas and motivate others undergoing a similar journey.
