The Obalon 3-Balloon System helps facilitate weight loss by taking up space in your stomach so you eat less.

How are the Obalon balloons placed?

  1. The patient swallows a capsule containing the deflated balloon.
  2. After the capsule dissolves, the surgeon fills the balloon with gas using a microcatheter.
  3. The second balloon and third balloons are placed one at a time every two weeks. This gives the stomach time to adjust to each new balloon.
  4. The balloon placement only takes 10 minutes.

  • Each balloon weighs less than a penny and is the size of a small orange.
  • There is no downtime- you leave the office and resume normal activities right away.
  • No sedation is required to place the balloons.

How are the Obalon balloons removed?

  1. After six months from the initial balloon being placed, the balloons are all removed together.
  2. The patient is slightly sedated with anesthesia.
  3. An endoscope, a tube with cameras at the end, is inserted into the stomach through the esophagus. By using an endoscopic technique, this means no incisions are required.
  4. The surgeon is able to see the balloons with the aid of the camera. Each balloon is deflated and then removed through the tube.
  5. This entire removal process takes only 20 minutes.
